Good point. Some people see the date on the right side and mistake it for the post date. It's the date that member joined the forum.

Clicking the topic title will take you to the first page of posts for the topic thread. To get to the most recent posts page, if there is more than one page of posts, click the last, or larger number, page number [just to the left of the 'REPLIES' column].
Once you've opened the first page of the thread, there's a "First unread post" link on the right side, just above the first post.
But instead of clicking on the thread title, it's just easier to click on the icon (which will be read if there's any unread posts in the thread), or the reddish/orange square that marks a thread with new posts.
You can change the order of the posts in the thread though "User Control Panel", "Board Preferences", "Edit display options", "Display post order direction".
