Creating Broadcast Audio Backups

Broadcasts from the Church are inspiring, spiritually uplifting events. However, a broadcast failure can be disruptive and frustrating for all who traveled to the meetinghouse. To minimize this disruption, the technology specialist (TS) should have a backup solution ready to bring the broadcast back online as quickly as possible. There are a variety of options for backup. For example, satellite can often be used as a backup for internet streaming, and vice versa. This article focuses exclusively on mobile phone audio solutions.

STEP 1: CONNECT MOBILE DEVICE TO CHURCH BROADCAST PHONE LINE

1. Contact the Global Services Department (GSD) .
   • Generally, only technology specialists and local leadership should contact the GSD.
   • Tell the GSD operator that the broadcast is failing.
   • The help desk will transfer you to the appropriate audio backup language bridge.
   • When you call, one of two things will happen:
     • The call will be patched directly into the requested language feed. Or,
     • The operator will ask for the phone number where he or she can return the call. Internationally, this option may be less expensive.
2. Listen to the call audio to ensure that the broadcast is transmitting properly.

STEP 2: CONNECT MOBILE DEVICE TO CHAPEL AUDIO SYSTEM

1. Connect a 3.5 mm or dual RCA connector to the mobile device on one end, and connect the other end to the matching connector on the side of the pulpit that links to the chapel audio system.
   • For some smartphones, an adapter (dongle) may be needed to make the connection.
   • Audio systems vary throughout the Church. Not all connection types will work in all chapels.
2. Activate the chapel audio system.
   • The button to activate the chapel audio system is found on a pedestal where the bishopric normally sits.
