SSDI (disability welfare US) payments and tithing

Post by eschonlau »

Hi,
I’ve read the related threads on here as well as looked at the scriptures and handbook. I’ve met with my bishop who says he does not know and it is up to me. I’m scared I’ll break the law. Is it legal to pay tithing on disability benefits that the US government is giving you monthly as part as SSDI? I paid tithing on them for the first couple of years but now I’m not sure if it’s legal. I could call the social security office and ask but I think they’ll say no. What do I do?

I'm neither a lawyer nor a financial expert, but looking around a little bit online, it seems that SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance) has very few limits on how money can be spent. For example:

Note that SSI (Supplemental Security Income) is different from SSDI, and has more restrictions.
