Region or Mission Calendar

I live in the Houston Texas area. I am in the Single Adult (30+) program. The Houston SA program was recently split into 3 groups based on the 3 mission boundaries. There is a need to calendar events that could be viewed by all Singles in this area. As far as I can find the calendar is limited to your own stake. Is there a way to do this?

I use google calendar extensively. It looks like the church calendar is very similar to Google. I have built a calendar or set of calendars that accomplish the stated goal but it would be much better if we could use the church's calendar.

I see this as an option based on membership and calling records. If a member is in either of the special groups. i.e. Singles they would have view access to the mission level calendar for their group. A calling in the Singles program would give write access. This would allow members in the Singles council to communicate across stake boundaries but would not allow the entire city wide. But it would be a start.

Is this possible?

I'm not sure. I've seen clues that the code might allow it, but the calendar would have to be created and managed at a higher level - either by the mission or the area authority.

(Oh, and the SA program is 31+, not 30+)

No, the calendar does not support those higher levels.

Also, Why is the Singles age 31+ I am very uncomfortable with dancing with kids my sons age and then uncomfortable with dancing with someone my grandfathers age. Who can I talk to about this. I am not the only one who has this concern. Why can't we change the ages up to 40, then 41 to 65, then 66+

Your local leaders (bishopric, relief society presidency, and elders quorum presidency) should have knowledge about young single adult and single adult points of contact for activities and events. At least that is one of their responsibilities identified in General Handbook, 14. There is a good chance your stake has a young single adult council and single adult council. Those with callings in the stake for young single adults and single adults are found in both the mobile Member Tools app and the online Ward Directory and Maps app.

In Member Tools tap the "Organizations" tile, select your stake in the unit drop-down list-box menu, select "Other Callings" and then "Single Adult" to see who is the stake single adult representative(s). Contact them for information about single adult activities.

In the Ward Directory and Maps app select "Entire Stake" in the units drop-down list-box, select the "Organizations" tab at the bottom of the page in the directory pane, select "Additional Callings" and then "Single Adult" to see who is the stake single adult representatives(s).

Why is the Singles age 31+ ...

The ages for young single adults was recently changed to 18-35. Single adults is now 36+. The Church addresses only young single adults and single adults age groups as identified in General Handbook, 14. Any further breakdown of these age groups would be dependent on local needs. Your stake single adult representative will be knowledgeable of your local and area single adult groups, if they exist.

Unfortunately, many times your local church leaders won't know what's going on with singles activities. The current church organizational structure doesn't deal well with concepts that extend beyond stake boundaries, such as singles activities in a large metropolitan area (yes, it can happen, but based on feedback from some single friends, it seems like it requires a stake president in an area to champion the cause). You might be old enough to remember "regional representatives" (it looks like was discontinued in 1995; I thought it was a little before then). Back then, church regions could easily handle multi-stake singles activities. I don't know the reasons the church made that organizational change, but I was a YSA on the regional committee when the change occurred and some very well-organized singles activities fell apart as a result of that change. It seems like they didn't really think through the impact that change would have on the needs of single church members.

Probably your best bet is to get find some church singles who know what's going on in the area and can help you get acquainted with people and activities. I'm in southern California and I know there's a regular email that someone puts together telling people about single adult activities in the area. Perhaps something similar exists where you live. Ask the stake. Most SA planning and activities start at that level and work outward. And the Church recently changed the SA age to 36 and up.

In addition to the other suggestions that have been given, I have found that most single adult groups use Facebook to communicate. There is a Texas Single Adult FB group the sometimes includes Houston activities and conferences. There is also a FB group of San Antonio single adults. At this time, those are the two most active FB groups in Texas of which I am aware.

Watching those groups, you may be able to find contacts in the Houston area where you will be able to seek additional information. You might also check to see if your stake has a single adult committee. If not, there should be a member of the high council with an assignment to help single adults.

The Dallas/Fort Worth area usually has two SA conferences a year. San Antonio has at least one and is becoming even more active. Once you find one SA contact, you will be able to network from there and find many single adults and SA activities.

In the Houston area there will probably be SA firesides from time to time, usually hosted by individual stakes. You might try to find one of those to begin making contact with others. In the DFW area there are enough stakes that there is a fireside for SA three or four Sundays a month.

Regarding multi-stake coordination, I believe the equivalent to our previous "Regional Representative" is essentially the "Area Seventy". And the "Coordinating Council Meetings" described in General Handbook 29.4, would likely be the ideal place for this type of multi-stake coordination to occur. And I completely agree that unless there is a stake president who is a champion of this effort, it's unlikely that any meaningful time will be spent at the Coordinating Council level, and then we're all left with the typical scrounging-around for information regarding ongoing multi-stake singles activities (whether YSA or Single Adult).

When our current Area Seventy was Stake President, he made an effort to organize singles activities and outreach in his stake, including calling a single member into his stake presidency. Now at the Coordinating Council level, he's at least quite sensitive and aware of these needs, and my perspective is that he's at least making an effort to include this alongside other important topics they deal with in those meetings. Just another way of saying that like in most organizations in-and-out of the church, unless a leader chooses to make something a priority, it will likely be swallowed up by other equally-important matters.
