A list of free internet filters against adult content

I have noticed that typical "review" sites often leave out free solutions simply because they are paid reviews (advertisements just posing as reviews).

Found a couple of others.

Zscaler offers several free browser plugins and other tools that do some specialized web security things, such as prevents 'like-jacking' on Facebook, something few people know about. Several are browser-specific although most support multiple browsers (stated which).

Sophos offers a couple of freebies, including a virus removal tool that work alongside most other antivirus programs to catch what they miss and remove them.

Lifehacker made an article titled, "Five Best Content Filtering Tools". OpenDNS looks like it was voted the best, but I haven't tried any except the hosts file yet (gonna use Squid though). Link to teh Articles: http://lifehacker.com/5312820/five-best ... ring-tools

I've also found OpenDNS to be good, but only for blocking spam, it's not nearly as good as even the best paid ones for blocking problem websites.

Hadn't heard of the other two you mention in your post though.

One thing to remember for me is that many of these sites rely on the DNS pointing to them and are easily bypassed by setting the DNS entries statically - I have helped friends implement a DD-WRT wireless solution that includes a redirect for ALL DNS queries at the firewall - regardless of what DNS is assigned on the OS inside the home. A nice safety measure, particularly, if you are already concerned with some issues.

That would be true in the case of OpenDNS, yet only (well, mostly) the tech savy know how to bypass it. Also, from the way you described your system, it can still be bypassed by using the etc/hosts file. In the case of Squid and DansGaurdian though, it can't be bypassed (unless you are tunneling via SSH or VPN ofc). The resoning behind this is whenever a request is sent through squid, it goes through reverse DNS on the squid server, therefore, even if they were to modify thoe /etc/hosts file, or type the IP manually, it wouldn't work.
That is of course, if you set them up as a transparent proxy.

OpenDNS coupled with K9 webprotection is pretty powerful. I know my kids hate it;)

I used K-9 Web Protection. The basic version is free.

The problem with OpenDNS is, as others have mentioned, that it's easy to bypass.
