Acoustic piano disappeared and replaced with digital piano

Post by ddenley »

This week, the acoustic piano in my chapel - a stake meetinghouse with 4 wards, was suddenly replaced with a digital piano. There was nothing wrong with the acoustic piano, we have many people in my ward and the other wards in my stake who are highly skilled at playing the piano. I'm baffled as to why this happened. Can anyone shed any light on whether this is something that is going to happen everywhere?

My concern is this:
There is a difference between technicality and musicality. I could technically learn to play a digital piano/keyboard, but I can't play it with musicality, because I can't put the same expression, feeling and spirit into a digital keyboard. It's not physically possible.

Just as we are discouraged from using AI in the church, as the artist cannot convey the Spirit, why would musicians be forced to use the same digital principle as AI, but on a digital "fake" piano? It is not the real thing, only an imitation.

Any thoughts?

Disturbing indeed.

You should probably take it up with whomever made the change in your ward and stake. Hopefully we are not beyond communicating with one another through direct human interaction, despite the recent trends to shield humans from other humans using "AI".

I'd definitely take it up with the stake facilities rep (likely a HC), and perhaps the stake music coordinator or adviser. And I'd also suggest there's at least a possibility that this is a well thought-out action, which might be understood when details are learned. Just to caution against getting overly worked-up or making conclusions about this before understanding more (at which point if it still doesn't make sense, then it's reasonable to be concerned!)
