Download Video's with Subtitles

Is there a way to download a video for offline use where the subtitles are embedded? I see there is a subtitle option to download, but when I click on it I only get a very small file and not the video with subtitles. (https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/med ... o?lang=eng).

You need a reader that can use that small file to display the subtitle during playback. I'm not sure what players support that. Hopefully someone else does.

A quick Google suggests using VLC player.

Thanks - so there is no way to have the subtitles embedded in the file so when I show it offline in my powerpoint file it is already there?

Not that I know of. But odds are PowerPoint is going to call an external viewer. So it may depend on what you have as the default viewer for that kind of file.

The regular 720p video download for that video (and almost all the others, too) already has subtitles. You don't need to download the closed caption file. For me, they're already enabled by default, too (I have to turn them off if I don't want them).

FYI: I'm playing on Parole Media Player 4.6.0 on the Xubuntu 22.04.4 LTS 64-bit Linux operating system, but I don't think what system and media player I use matters as to whether the subtitles are available. It might relate to why they're always enabled, though, but I'm not sure.

I tried the 1080p download, too, and it has subtitles by default also.

FYI: They are subtitles, and not closed captions. I mean, they don't have the black background. They appear all at once instead of word by word.

Right now the server seems a bit wonky, so I can't verify.

I think the phrase you're looking for is "Open Caption". Closed Caption is when the text is hidden and requires a decoder to make it visible (Open Caption).

Subtitles tends to suggest a translation.

In the analog days, closed caption was standardized and "baked in" the video signal. But from what I hear, it's not so great in the digital world, with it requiring a separate file and less standardized. (Note the download link on the page for the Closed Caption file.)

Edit: I was able to download the 720 file. It is not Open Caption. "Media Player" in Windows can work with the separate .vtt file for "subtitles". The older "Windows Media Player" program doesn't seem to have that functionality.

It's possible the file is Close Captioned, but it would require a compatible player to work with it.
