Temporary Membership Records are created for people who need to be on the ward lists, but are not members of the ward. There are three kinds of temporary membership records: Out of Unit Records, Nonmember Records, and Temporary Records. Temporary records are stored in the local MLS database, but are not stored at CHQ.

Out of Unit Records
An Out of Unit Record is used for a member who is serving in a ward other than his or her home ward. This often happens in student wards, single adult wards, and care center units. The membership records for such people remain in their home wards, but it is desirable to include them in the membership lists of the ward they are serving in so that they can be included in leadership directories, phone lists, etc.

To create an Out of Unit Record:
# In MLS, go to Membership Records > Create Records > Out of unit member record.
# Enter as much information as possible. For a regular membership record, the membership record can be requested and will bring with it many details regarding ordinances, relatives, temple and mission, etc. But with an Out of Unit record, only the information manually entered into MLS will be available.
# If the member will be an MLS User, make sure that you enter the Membership Record Number.
# If the member is to be assigned a leadership position that requires a certain priesthood office (e.g., bishop), make sure you enter the required priesthood ordination. Otherwise MLS will not permit the person to be assigned to that calling.
# Close and Save your changes.

Limitation on Out of Unit Spouses
As of MLS 2.9.2, it is not possible to create two Out of Unit members that are married to each other. One option is to create an Out of Unit record for the husband and a temporary record for the wife:
1. Create the out of unit record for the husband, specifying him as head of household, and manually entering all the information for his wife in his Current Spouse section.
2. Then go into the husband's individual record and go to the Current Spouse section.
3. Click the Add Spouse to Household link.

This will have the effect of creating a regular Temporary Record for the wife (rather than an Out-of-Unit Record, which is a special kind of Temporary Record). There is little difference (except when they are released from their callings, you go to the Remove Temporary Record screen, since the Remove Out of Unit Member screen won't include the wife). But the husband and wife will be listed as a married couple on any household-oriented reports.

The other option is to create Out of Unit records for each of them. This will make each record a true Out of Unit record, but there is no way to have them married to each other with regard to MLS, so they will show up as individuals on any household-oriented reports.

Nonmember Records
Create a nonmember record only when the nonmember is related to a member of your ward and you have the permission of the nonmember. For example, you could create a record for a nonmember spouse or parent of a member. These will be kept in your ward's computer only and will not be transmitted to the administration office.

Information on nonmember records will not print on organization lists and rolls because the organization profiles do not include nonmembers. Nonmembers will print on family type reports such as the directory of members, the telephone directory, and so forth.

Temporary Records
A temporary record is created when a baby is blessed and the blessing is recorded in MLS. This is done via Membership Records > Record Child Blessing. After the information is entered and saved, two things will occur:
* A request for a membership record will be queued up to be sent to CHQ on the next Send/Receive.
* A temporary record will be created for the child, so that the child will show up immediately on all appropriate ward lists.

Once the real record has been created by CHQ and transmitted to the ward, the temporary record can be deleted.

Removing Temporary Records
To remove a temporary record in MLS, go to Membership Records > View and Update > Other Record Changes. There you can choose:
* Remove Out of Unit Member
* Remove Nonmember
* Remove Temporary Records

This last option allows you to remove any of the three types of temporary records.

A Priesthood Line of Authority shows who ordained an individual and who in turn ordained them and so on back to the Lord.

Thousands of ordinances are performed weekly throughout the Church. These ordinances are to be performed by priesthood holders who have been properly ordained and properly authorized by one who has the keys to authorize the ordinance under the direction of the prophet. Therefore, a priesthood authority line traces a priesthood holder's authority from the person ordaining him back to the Lord (D&C 42:11).

Definition of Line of Authority
The line of authority is traced through the office held at the time of the ordination:

<blockquote>If a priesthood bearer desires to trace his own line of authority, he should pursue his current office in the priesthood &mdash; not former offices. Bishops and patriarchs should trace their line of authority as high priests. In completing an authority line, each step should go back through the office held by the person at the time he performed the ordination. It is not appropriate to trace the line of authority in cases of setting apart or for other ordinances.</blockquote>

How to Request a copy of a Priesthood Line of Authority
Methods of Contacting
Contact Member and Statistical Records at CHQ in one of the following ways:

* Email: [mailto:lineofauthority@ldschurch.org lineofauthority@ldschurch.org] with PLA in the subject line. In return you'll receive a form to fill out and return (this is an automated reply to any message that contains "PLA" in the subject line).

* Phone: 800-453-3860 ext 23500 then choose option 6, then option 3. After the message and tone leave a voice mail message with your fax number or mailing address. The form will be mailed to you.

* Phone: 800-453-3860 ext 23500 then choose option 6, then option 2. After being on hold (potentially for a considerable time), ask the attendant that you'd like a copy of your priesthood line of authority. They'll mail it to you.

Helpful Information
Be prepared with as much of the following information as possible (your ward clerk MAY be able to help you with some of this information):

# Full name of the priesthood holder
# Date of birth
# Current ward and stake
# Address and Zip Code
