KMZ files from CDOL and QGIS

Does anybody know why the KML files that are contained within the KMZ files available from CDOL will open correctly and display in Grass, Google Earth and ArcView Explorer but will not render in QGIS?

Others (such as THIS post) have reported QGIS rendering problems also with the church's KMZ/KML files. Sorry, can't help much more than that.
