A quick Google shows that TV sets 13" or larger made after July 1993 have to have CC capability (although there may be issues with HDTV). I know the big TV sets in our library have that function. We've got an older Sharp projector that only does video (no computer input). I seem to remember close captioning in the menu, but can't be sure as I've never used that function.
But I think you're on the right track - find out what they watched it on and check the manual.
