That is fine advise for personal use, but not for church use since there are restrictions on such things. Best I can suggest is call SLC and beg to be put on the beta Internet connectivity.

Modem speed doubled with improved building wiring

#12

We have 3 wards and a stake computer all connected to the same phone line for dial-up MLS connection. The wiring was of various ages - most likely up to 40 years old. When the phone system in the building was replaced with a new phone system last month, all of the phone wiring was replaced with Cat5e cable. We went from about 18 to 22Kbps rates to 40 or even 44Kbps overnight.

I believe the wiring connected to this line was approaching 1000 ft inside the building -- and that's after the connection point (demarcation point) inside the stake building. Some of the wire which was removed was Cat3. Some was very cheap 4 conductor wire, and some was old 25 pair phone cable. The splices were interesting to say the least. And of course it was "star" wired from one point branching to all modem connection points. The new wiring is still "star" wired, and follows the same paths/conduits, but without extra splices and with Cat5e cable and punch-down phone connectors throughout the building.

I suspect the phone company wiring is not as much to blame as the old cobbled together wiring in many of our buildings.

Try a DSL/Phone line filter

#13

Post by hkk2 »

There is also a DSL/Phone line filter. I lived in an apartment complex a few years back with some less then happy wiring. I used a line filter for my dial up connection and it did boost my connection up a couple of notches. I did not have DSL service, but it did help take out some of the noise. I think I remember seeing one at Walmart (not that I'm endorsing them) for about $5.99. I've been tempted to pull out my old filter, since I keep all my legacy hardware, and try it out at on the stake clerk computer to see if it helps.
