Adobe Reader will not allow license agreement offline

Have your STS download Adobe Reader from http://mls.lds.org

The version available is 8.1.0. The download from the MLS site should work for the 5.5 desktop.

I cannot use Adobe Reader 8.1.x on our system because it tries to verify the license agreement online, and, of course, there is no live connection outside of the mls connection.

I am not sure which Firewall program you are using, so I will speak about the program that I use: ZoneAlarm (Free Version). I have ZoneAlarm set to NOT Allow any internet access (All 'X's) for Adobe Reader 8.1 . As a result, I have no trouble using Adobe Reader 8.1 off line. (Why does it need internet access anyway... unless I give it a URL to open?)

If you are not using ZoneAlarm, check to see if your Firewall can be set accordingly for Adobe Reader 8.1 .

The computer in question would be an administrative computer and the firewall settings cannot be changed by the user.

Perhaps this should be an area of investigation:

1. Can the present firewall program be controlled?
2. Should the firewall program be changed to the Free ZoneAlarm?

From my own experience, I am tired of programs (including Microsoft products) that "need" to access the internet. Most of them do not.

Good thoughts, but in this situation the settings are controlled by Church Headquarters and the choice of program is mandated. It's really not an option for anyone at the Stake level.

Also, the computer may not have any Internet connection at all. Just the MLS phone call which does use TCP/IP but is so heavily filtered at the ISP as to not be usable for anything but MLS.

I agree, but there must be a way to have ideas filter upwards other than just through prayers.

It's quite limited.

However, in many cases there is no Internet connection whatsoever. In those cases, it's all a moot point. The question is how to do it in those situations. There really needs to be a way to install Adobe Reader "off-line".

Since the original post by cdwilliams concerned having difficulty getting Adobe Reader 8.1 installed on a computer because it would try to connect to the internet to verify a licensing agreement I decided to check out if this would happen for me. My curriosity was peaked because I have never in the ten plus years of doing a clean install of the readers had a requirement to connect to the internet to complete an install.

I decided to see afresh what is required to install the Adobe Reader. I did this on my personal compter and not an administrative computer. After downloading the Adobe Reader 9.1 installer from a reputable web site such as cnet.com I disabled my internet connection and uninstalled the Reader. I then installed the Reader successfully without an internet connection being needed. The program was opened and files read without any internet connection attempts by the program.

Since the user cdwilliams was trying to install version 8.1, I located that version's installer and repeated the process. It installed without requiring an internet connection. I also used the copy found at mls.lds.org and had no problems.

The only possible need for an internet connection I found was when additional software bundled with the distributed installer was allowed to be included in the install.

My conclusion is that the need to connect to the internet is not a requirement of the basic Adobe Reader program but rather comes from bundled, or tag along, software packages.

If you get Adobe Reader the normal way on their site, you end up getting the Adobe DLM (Download Manager?). It is a bootstrapper application that will actually download the product for you and install it, with the ability to resume if you pause it or lose connection. It says it is powered by getPlus(R) and it also has a NOSSO logo in the UI. Here is a link to that company and their product (apparently NOSSO is their proprietary compression technology):

There could obviously be internet connection issues with that.

However, the original user is talking about license agreement. I do not have any information to help with that issue.

To use the Adobe Download Manager the installation would have to be started from an internet connection. There is no way that I know of to use the ADM at a computer without an internet connection. With that in mind cdwilliam's issue would be mute since they would already be using an Internet connection.

Ironically the Adobe license agreement for the Adobe Reader is only available on-line. If you have the Reader installed and try to access it from the program it is not available. Instead you can only view the patent, legal notices, and credits.
