Searching for scripture references cited in hymns?

#1

Post by spencer.penrod »

I am pretty sure this is not currently possible, but I thought I'd ask just in case someone smarter than me can prove me wrong:

#1 - Is the scripture references portion of the physical hymbook has been digitized? I can't seem to find it.

#2 - Say I want to look to see if there is any hymn in the LDS hymnbook references a specific verse (such as Isaiah 2:2-3). Is there a way to search for that and see that there is at least one? (In this case, Hymn #5, "High on a Mountaintop")?

I think it would be a good resource for students and teachers to try and incorporate more music into their teaching and personal study.

The sacred music app has the scriptures down the bottom in the same way that the printed hymn books (both sheet music and lyrics-only display).

Music in Gospel Library also has them, but only in the Lyrics tab. That is also where the extra verses are hiding. Personally, I find this to be an inconvenient nuisance, although it may have made the variable length display of individual measures easier to program.

But I think what the original poster may be trying to find is the section in the back of the printed hymnbook with the Index that includes all of the scriptures referenced with the hymns. To my knowledge, it is not digitized anywhere. And I have not found a version of the hymnbook that is searchable and will return a scripture reference, or a portion of text from a particular hymn, which is also useful sometimes.

The Scriptures index (matching the one at the back of the physical hymnbook) can be found here: https://site.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/manual/using-the-hymnbook?lang=eng

If you go to https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/mus ... s?lang=eng and search where it says "Search music library" that will do what you are looking to do. Using your example of isaiah 2:2-3 finds 3 results which include "High on the Mountain Top", "The Wintry Day, Descending to Its Close", and "O Ye Mountains High". If you just search for Isaiah you will see all the hymns that reference a scripture from Isaiah.
