Upgrades
The main reason I asked was because I asked the person that had this job before me (and I think we asked via the MLS message system - pre Desktop 5.5) and the answer I got both times was no - wait for the church to send the upgrade. I saw that the mls.lds.org site pointed to www.openoffice.org, but I told that I should wait. I got tired of waiting so I decided to ask a difference source...

Open Office is not part of any upgrade from CHQ (church headquarters). The church provides a link to OO on the mls.lds.org web site in addition to a selection of other "approved" software that can be downloaded and installed.net_runner wrote:The main reason I asked was because I asked the person that had this job before me (and I think we asked via the MLS message system - pre Desktop 5.5) and the answer I got both times was no - wait for the church to send the upgrade. Up to date OO
Open Office is legal, any version... the latest actually does all you need (very Word-like, without the cost). I've set ours up to print envelopes for mailing checks, for example.
As to the slow download, I just download the install program at home, save it to my thumb drive, and install it at church.
PS One of the great things about OO is that you can save any of your documents (text or spreadsheet) in PDF format, so you can give something to others without their being able to modify it, or without there having to have OO or Office installed.

OpenOffice Base 3.0 is Acceptable
I agree that 2.0's Base application wasn't worth using, but I have found the OpenOffice 3.0 Base application to be an acceptable and a refreshing alternative to Access--even though it doesn't have an "export to .mdb" (Access) file format. To give it a test drive, here is a "family address book" I made:boomerbubba wrote:Anyone have experience using the Base application (the OpenOffice database module) in v 3.0?

PS
I am now doing missionary work at this website by linking to my site--which has a link to mormon.org. Though pretty meager, it is the best effort at cyber missionary work I've ever accomplished--so I would like to pass it along.
